- Abstract
A serum from a 70 year old male Australian aborigine is described which reacts only with enzyme-treated cells carrying the E antigen. The serum reacts strongly with all E-positive cells from Caucasian whites, but fails to react with a large number of E-positive cells from Australian aborigines. Gene frequency analysis and family studies suggest that the E antigen is complex. Caucasian whites are antigenically all E+ET, whereas Australian aborigines may be homozygous E + ET, heterozygous E+ET/E + Et or homozygous E + Et/E + Et. The aboriginal serum studied is a "naturally-occurring" anti-ET. Preliminary evidence suggests that anti-E sera of immune origin from Caucasian whites are principally anti-E + ET.
