This file contains information on an Indigenous woman, Elsie Nelson from Leonora Reserve who in 1967 was only one of six in the world to have blood completely devoid of the Rh factor. There is much correspondence between R.L. Kirk and Wilfred Douglas (Aboriginal language expert of the United Aborigines Mission); between R.L. Kirk and Dr Race (Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine, London) ; Ruth Sanger (Blood Group Research Unit, The Lister Institute, London); between R.L. Kirk and Professor Henry Bennett (Department of Genetics, The University of Adelaide); between R.L. Kirk and D.L. Hayman (Department of Genetics, The University of Adelaide) and between R.L. Kirk and Dell Vos. The correspondence pertains to the testing of Elsie Nelson's blood, discussion of the results, the writing up of the results for The Lancet, and arrangements for analysing Nelson's chromosomes. The file includes an article cut from The Canberra Times, July 7, 1967, 'One of six in world' 'Mrs Elsie Nelson', a typewritten version of the manuscript, 'A Case of Complete Absence of the Rh Blood Group Antigens', tables of results, a handdrawn map of family relationship or genealogy of Elsie Nelson and working notes.
