Place Laverton
Western Australia
Summary
Laverton is a small town located at the western edge of the Great Victoria Desert, 957 km north-northeast of the Western Australia's capital, Perth. The land is very arid with a mean annual rainfall of 230mm. The population in 2006 was only 316 and a third of these people are of Aboriginal descent. Laverton is in Wongi country. The town was originally founded because of gold discovery in the area in 1896 but by the late 1960s, Laverton was in decline due to the low price of gold. In 1969, a huge nickel deposit was discovered and nickel was mined and processed for the next 20 years.
