Place Jigalong

Western Australia

Summary

Jigalong Community is located in an Aboriginal Lands Trust reserve on the western edge of the Little Sandy Desert, in the Pilbara region, 1070 km north north east of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia. In 2011, the population was recorded as 427 people of whom 76% were Aboriginal. The community was established in 1907 for the workmen constructing the Rabbit-proof fence; in the 1930s it was used as a site for breeding camels; and in 1947 the Apostolic Church used it as a Christian mission for Aboriginal people. In 1969, the land was returned to the Australian government and then granted to the Martu people in 1974.
