Place Edward River
Summary
Edward River Aboriginal Mission, now known as Pormpuraaw was established in 1938 as an Anglican mission and then in 1967, control passed to the Queensland Department of Aboriginal and Islander Affairs. Pormpuraaw is now an Aboriginal community with a commerical crocodile farm, a cattle station and some tourism. It is situated on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, on the Edward River, 650km from Cairns by road. In 2011, the population numbered 662.
