Place Yuendumu

Summary

Yuendumu is a remote Aboriginal community located on the Tanami Track, 293 km northeast of Alice Springs in Central Australia. The Australian Government established it in 1946 as a centre for administering rations and welfare services and then in 1947, a Baptist mission was established there. The community has a population of around 690 (2011 census) of whom most are Warlpiri and Anmatyerr Aboriginal people, and is located on traditional Anmatyerr and Warlpiri land. It is well known for its Warlukurlangu art centre and its thriving community of Aboriginal artists. The community also has its own women's centre, media centre and a cutting edge youth program, as well as shops, airstrip, swimming pool, school, football team and church.
