- Description
This file contains correspondence between Professor Sue Serjeantson (Human Genetics Group, John Curtin School of Medical Research) and Garth Nicholson (Director Molecular Genetics and Medicine Laboratory, Concord Hospital, NSW); between Professor Sue Serjeantson and Setsuya Naito (M.D. Second Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine Fukuoka University); between Professor Sue Serjeantson and Professor John Mathews (Menzies School of Health Research, NT); between Professor Sue Serjeantson and Dr Bart Currie (Assistant Director, Menzies School of Health Research, Darwin NT) ; and between Professor Sue Serjeantson and Tim Burt (Menzies School of Health Research, NT). The majority of the correspondence pertains to a collaboration between Serjeantson, Currie, Burt and Mathews on a study of the neurological disease on Groote Eylandt and East Arnhem mainland. The DNA samples are from the Rheumatic Heart Disease series. There is also correspondence from Garth Nicholson to The Secretary, Senate Standing Committee on Employment, Parliament House, Canberra (27/1/1992) voicing his concern over the move to disband the John Curtin School of Medical Research through amalgamation. He also believes that the John Curtin School should be allowed to apply for NHMRC research grants, and that there is no reason why tenure should be eliminated. The solution to the problem is not to change the sources of funding and affiliations of the School but to ensure multiple sources of funding and independence for the School. There is correspondence from Sue Serjeantson to Professor John Mathews (17/6/1992) soliciting his ideas on the logistics and politics of the Cavalli-Sforza/Kidd initiative to establish a repository of transformed cell lines from 'endangered' human populations, under the auspices of the Human Genome Project. The file also contains a 'Proposal to determine cDNA nucleotide sequences in HLA class I alleles in certain participants in the Groote Eylandt study'.
