Summary

The Kimberley forms the most northerly region of Western Australia, bordered in the north by the Timor Sea, in the west by the Indian Ocean and in the south by the Great Sandy and Tanami Deserts. It is an area of 423,517 square km with a population of 50,113 (in 2011). The first settlers are thought to have arrived from Indonesia about 41,000 years ago. The most populated towns are Broome, Derby and Kununurra, and approximately 40% of the region's population is of Aboriginal descent.
