Place Mitchell River Mission
Summary
Mitchell River Mission was the name used for many years to refer to what is now known as Kowanyama. The Anglican Church established the Mitchell River Mission in 1917 on Magnificent Creek in Far North Queensland, Australia. In 1971, control of the mission passed from the Anglican Church to the Department of Aboriginal and Island Affairs and it became a government administered reserve known as Kowanyama. Today the Kowanyama Aboriginal Council administers the community.
