Place Hooker Creek Settlement

Summary

Hooker Creek Settlement is located 550 km south west of Katherine in the Northern Territory of Australia where the land is semi arid on the edge of the Tanami Desert. It was established by the government in 1948 and a large number of people from Yuendumu Settlement were moved there. In 1962, missionaries from the Australian Baptist Home Mission were sent to Hooker Creek, and in 1978, the settlement was returned to the local community. From then on it became known as Lajamanu. According to the 2011 census, Lajamanu has a population of 656 and these people are mainly Warlpiri people who have maintained strong language and cultural traditions; hunting, ceremonies and traditional art being very important.
