Summary

The Northern Territory is located in the centre and central northern regions of Australia, sharing borders with Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland. It covers an area of 1,420,970 square km and has Darwin as its capital. It is the most sparsely populated state or territory in Australia, the population being 243,700 in 2014, of which 32.5% are Indigenous Australians. Indigenous Australians own approximately 49% of the land. The largest Aboriginal communities are the Pitjantjatjara near Uluru, the Arrente near Alice Springs, the Luritja, the Warlpiri further north and the Yolngu in eastern Arnhem Land.
