Summary

Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory and Australia's most northerly capital city. Situated on the Timor Sea, it is relatively close to Dili (East Timor), Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea), and Jakarta (Indonesia) hence a significant proportion of Darwin's residents are immigrants from South East Asia. It has a tropical savannah climate with distinct wet and dry seasons; the wet season bringing tropical cyclones and monsoon rains. The population was estimated at 81,760 in 2013. The traditional owners and first inhabitants of the area are the Larrakia people. Darwin's economy relies upon the mining industry and tourism. The city was rebuilt are being subjected to Japanese air raids during World War II, and again after being destroyed by Cyclone Tracy in 1974.
