Place Areyonga

Northern Territory

Summary

Areyonga, known locally as Utju, is situated in the valley of a spectacular gorge in the MacDonnell Ranges, about 240km west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia. It had a population of about 237 (in 2011) most of whom are Pitjantjatjara, with some Arrente and Walpiri families. Most people speak Pitjantjatjara. A Lutheran mission was established there in the 1940s and was closed in 1990 when the land was given back to the Indigenous owners as part of the Haasts Bluff Aboriginal Land Trust. The MacDonnell Regional council maintains services and facilities which include a swimming pool, an airstrip, child care, youth development, night patrol and home care services. The community is proud and active, with a thriving community arts centre, its own store, community hall and a weekly air service.
