Place Bamyili

Northern Territory

Summary

Bamyili or Barunga, with a population of about 350, is a small Aboriginal community located on the Central Arnhem Road, about 80 km southeast of Katherine and 320 km southeast of Darwin, in the Northern Territory, Australia. It is part of the Roper Gulf Region and has a health clinic, camping grounds, sports facilities, a council office and a community store. Barunga also has a thriving school with children ranging in age from 6 months to 19 years. Originally the people lived in humpies and the camp was called 'the Compound' and then in 1965 the elders changed the name to Bamyili and in 1984, its name was changed to Barunga. Also of historical interest, is that in June 1988, the Aboriginal tribes gathered and issued the "Barunga Statement" which they presented to Prime Minister, Bob Hawke at their local festival. It was written on bark and called for Aboriginal self-management, a national system of land rights, an end to discrimination, respect for Aboriginal identity and the granting of full civil, economic, social and cultural rights. This treaty later became the subject of the well-known song, "Treaty" written by the Australian Aboriginal band, Yothu Yindi.
