Place Hermannsberg

Northern Territory

Summary

Hermannsburg is an Aboriginal community, located 131 km southwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is in the Ljirapinta Ward of the MacDonnell Shire. In the local Western Arrente language, Hermannsburg is known as Ntaria. In 2011, the population was 625, 86% of whom are Aboriginal. Two Lutheran missionaries from Germany established the mission among the Aranda people in 1877 and named it Hermannsburg after the place in Germany where they had trained. In 1982, the mission land was transferred to traditional ownership. The Hermannsburg Historic Precinct is included on the Australian National Heritage List and much of the historic township is protected by the National Trust.
