Summary
Maryvale, now known as Titjikala or Tapatjatjaka, is an Aborginal community, population 201, is situated in the Simpson Desert in the south of the Northern Territory, Australia. Titjikala is now situated within the boundaries of the cattle station, Maryvale Station. Indigenous families worked at Maryvale Station as stockmen and as domestic helpers in return for rations, from the 1940s onwards. More people settled in the area throughout the 1950s when a mission truck visited every six weeks. In the 1970s, a school was built for the Titjikala people, in 1987 the community obtained freehold title to a 200 hectare area within the Maryvale station pastoral lease, and in 1988, the Northern Territory Government gazetted the Titjikala control plan. The traditional owners are the Arrernte people but it is also home to the Luritja and Pitjantjatjara people. The traditional languages spoken are Arrernte, Luritja and Pitjantjatjara. Titjikala and its surrounds are governed by the Tapatjatjaka Community Government council which employs 26 people. There is a general store, a school, women's centre, Indigenous arts centre, childcare centre, health clinic and a Lutheran church.
