Place Milingimbi

Northern Territory

Summary

Milingimbi Island is about half a km off the north coast of Central Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, in the Arafura Sea. In 2011, the population of Milingimbi and the surrounding area was about 1091 of which 94% were Indigenous. Traditional governance of Milingimbi is complicated because it is inhabited by over 21 clan groups, organized into five camps and has four ancestral estates. Milingimbi people belong to the Yolngu clans. Despite Aboriginal people having occupied the area for over 40,000 years, the Methodist Overseas Mission established the community in 1923. After being bombed in the Second World War, the island's residents moved to the mainland and to Elcho Island, and Milingimbi became an air force base. In 1951, the missionaries reestablished the town and opened a school. They continued to run Milingimbi until 1974, when the government transferred responsibility for administration to Milingimbi Community Incorporated which provided local government to the community. Since 2008,the East Arnhem Shire Council has provided local government in Milingimbi and the Northern Land Council works with the Traditional Owners and Custodians of Milingimbi Lands group.
