Summary

Umbakumba is located on Groote Eylandt on the traditional lands of the Warinindilyakwa people. The traditional owners of Umbakumba are the Mamarika clan. The community was established in 1938 as a base for trepanning and as service point for Qantas flying boats and during WWII it was used as a base for the Royal Australian Air Force flying boat. After the war, it was run by the Church Missionary Society as a mission. In 1966, it was taken over by the Australian Government and later absorbed into the East Arnhem Shire Council. The population and its surrounds is approximately 441 of whom 94% are Indigenous. Anindilyakwa is the language used in the communities of Groote Eylandt but there are also some Yolngu Matha speakers at Umbakumba. It has a school, a clinic, supermarket, police post, library, radio station and provides sports and recreation services as well as aged care services. The Aboriginal Corporation, Aminjarrinja Enterprises has established a construction business, trepan farming business and a mini mart in Umbakumba.
