Study Groote Eylandt Machado-Joseph Disease Study (1991 - 1992)

From
1991
To
1992

Summary

The aim of this study was to determine whether ataxia observed in Groote Eylandt Aboriginals was caused by Machado-Joseph Disease. Professor Sue Serjeantson from the Human Genetics Group (John Curtin School of Medical Research, ANU, Canberra) collaborated with Drs Bart Currie and Tim Burt from the Menzies School of Health Research (Northern Territory) and with Dr Garth A. Nicholson (Department of Medicine, Molecular Medicine & Genetics Laboratory, University of Sydney). Leukocytes (white cells) were separated from the blood, transformed into cell lines at the Menzies School of Health Research in Darwin and then Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) typing was performed after DNA extraction at John Curtin School of Medical Research, Canberra. Correspondence indicates that community consultation and informed consent were obtained from the study participants.
